A gold and silver strip mine in the northwestern state of Baja California poses threats to the health of residents and the environment, the Mexican Green Party said.
The Los Cardones project, which was unveiled on Sept. 5 and is being reviewed by the Environment Secretariat, threatens the Sierra de la Laguna ecosystem in Baja California, the party said.
"Open-pit gold production uses chemicals, such as cyanide and arsenic, that are harmful to people's health," the party said in a statement.
The project, which is being developed by the Desarrollos Zapal company, covers 44,000 hectares (108,641 acres). EFE
