The livelihoods of hundreds of illegal miners in the heart of Johannesburg may be at risk following a Hawks investigation into illegal mining syndicates operating near Soweto.
For almost a decade the residents of Mathole informal settlement in Roodepoort have been digging for gold near Main Reef Road as a way of making a living.
Police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko yesterday confirmed that the Hawks had been investigating the illegal mining operations for about a month after stumbling on a lead during investigations into precious metal dealings in the Johannesburg area.
