Speaking to the New Republic in an exclusive interview recently, Superintendent Allen Gborwee who sees illicit mining activities in the county as troubling said, the county is seriously affected day by day as these activities contribute largely to deforestation as well as forest degradation.
He lashed out at those involved in such an unwholesome practice and said as challenge to the people of the county; the trade is seriously affecting the lives of the people who feel exploited as a result of these activities.
"These illicit miners are in the constant habit of digging everywhere at the detriment of the locals who do not even know what minerals and how much quantities are being exploited", the Superintendent noted.
The Gbarpolu County Superintendent added that illicit miners can be seen in all the various districts in possession of licenses which automatically gave them the legal status to mine anywhere in the county without due benefits to the locals.
