In an interview, some of the residents complained the river had been polluted with mercury, a dangerous chemical used to wash gold.
The people disclosed that not too long ago, there was a cholera outbreak in the area which claimed about three lives and attributed it to the illegal mining otherwise known as ‘galamsey’ going on in Tano River.
Gyeni Gabriel, Assembly member for the Aleboale Nungua/Cocoa Town electoral area in the Jomoro district confirmed the activities of illegal miners in the river, cautioning that a cholera outbreak was imminent.
He indicated that apart from illegal miners polluting the river, some residents had also turned the river banks into a refuse dumping site and that whenever it rained; the rain water carried the garbage into the river.
