The film discusses the vitality of preserving the planet’s complex ecosystems, as well as humanity’s dependence on the environment through the example of gold mining in the Amazon rainforest.
Due to gold’s ability to maintain value and demand in international markets, illegal gold mines have spread across the Amazon rainforest in various parts of South America. Barges along the rivers filter liquefied earth for gold. When the gold sediment is filtered, workers add mercury to the sediment to isolate the gold. The mercury is then burned off, leaving the gold on its own to be sold on retail.
