“If a company uses conflict minerals and it comes to the attention of nongovernmental organisations and other stakeholders, they will rightfully make this information public, which would have an unwanted effect on the company’s consumers.”
Further, compliance is also important for companies who are suppliers. “Businesses might have procurement practices in place that are strict on the use of conflict minerals and, therefore, a company will be disqualified as a supplier if it does not have the necessary traceability measures in place, or if traceability shows that it uses conflict minerals,” says Plaizier.
