The problem now is, there is no independent expert group to check on the amount of cyanide component in the waste water, as well as the safety of the waste disposal dam. If something goes wrong, it could lead to land and groundwater contamination.
Therefore, it is not enough for the Health Ministry to investigate the health of affected residents, or suggest an engagement with local experts to find out the reason of the skin disease and eye irritation suffered by the residents. The government should invite foreign and local experts to assess the impact of cyanide gold-mining activities on the environment and humans.
