Gold mining in Mayuge district has been banned by the authorities. The ban follows the death of six miners buried alive by rubble as they dug deep in search of gold.
The Resident District Commissioner, Joram Mayatsa said in an interview on Monday that he has instructed anyone who wants to continue with the mining of gold to seek permission from the ministry of energy and mineral development.
Mayatsa said the owners of the illegal gold mines were recruiting children aged below 16 years to do casual labour on the mines contrary to the law.
He said anyone found to be violating the law and continues mining, risks being arrested and charged in courts of law.
Mayatsa said over 500 children dropped out of universal primary education in the district last year to go and work as casual labourers in the illegal gold mines.
