State health officials will test Nome gold miners for mercury exposure.
The state in a release says the voluntary screening will be held from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1.
Anecdotal accounts of miners finding mercury and gold-mercury amalgams in their operations prompted the screening.
Ali Hamade with the state Department of Health says some miners might be exposed to harmful mercury fumes when they heat gold to separate the mercury.
Those taking part in the testing will be asked to provide a urine sample. Results will be compared to a national database.
