A Chinese gold mining plant in the Chon-Alay district of Osh region harms the health of local residents, say protesters, who have threatened to burn the factory if it does not close before August 15. Local authorities believe that the company is working “for the good” people.
The company, Asia Gold Enterprises, which has resumed work after a year-long break, is angering local residents, who promised to burn the company’s job site if operations do not cease before August 15.
“The goal – is to burn it down. The government and law enforcement agencies have temporarily calmed [protesters] down. Tomorrow all will be solved,” said Altymysh Akimov, chairman of the youth wing of the district administration, who supports the protesters.
Waste from the plant is thrown into a river from which people in the Chon-Alai region drink, says Nurbek Tagaev, a leader of the protests.
