Cyanide is used to dissolve residual gold from the Bukit Koman mine that was shut down in the 1970s. The waste is then flushed into a lake, known as the tailing pond, for the cyanide to break down naturally.
A recent survey done by the villagers revealed that 78.1 percent of the residents in surrounding areas were suffering health problems, believed to be related to the cyanide used in local gold mine.
