Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud says the government will take stock of the damage done so far. He said Friday that river banks have been damaged, several species of fish are dying and that large trees have fallen and blocked channels.
The announcement comes as gold overtakes sugar as the country's top export, generating more than $1 billion in revenue.
