The old Ridgeway mine consisted of two gaping pits and included a tailings pond, a cyanide-polluted basin filled with water and sludge. At one point, nearly 700 birds died from exposure to the waste disposal area. Some neighbors complained about blasting. The old tailings pond has been covered with mounds of clay to prevent leakage and wildlife exposure. The company also has conducted monitoring of the water that fills the old mining pits, and so far, has not found major problems, a site researcher said Tuesday. Kennecott held a large community event in 2004 to tout efforts to clean up the mess.
