The type of geology found in the area of the Kuskokwim contains high concentrations of mercury and arsenic and has been referred to as the “mercury belt”. Mercury is a toxin that, at high levels, can damage the brain and other organs.
According to the resolution, recent studies conducted by the Bureau of Land Management on methyl mercury, as part of the Red Devil Mine Remedial Investigation process, have shown elevated mercury levels in streams where mining has occurred in the Kuskokwim drainage.
