The director of the Inter-institutional Platform Celendina, Milton Sanchez has reiterated his concerns that, in spite of potential new environmental legislation, excessive contamination will take place. It is estimated that 85,000 tonnes of toxic waste will be produced daily at the Conga mine, an amount that will inevitably damage Cajamarca’s wetlands. A government spokesman has confirmed that: ‘the decision shall be taken very seriously’.
As a result of the previous riots in response to the Conga gold mine, over 500 policeofficers have been sent to Cajamarca in order to deal with the potential outbreak once the results are announced. In addition to 300 police officers from Trujillo and 360 officers from the north, 260 military agents will also be sent in to deal with the fall-out from the government’s decision. A protest is scheduled to take place on the 9th April, as well as a general strike on the 11th April. Officials are concerned that the protests may well get violent.
