Poverty Drives Kenyan Boys From School Into Mines

Local health workers are concerned about the long-term impacts of gold mining on child health.  Mercury, which is used to extract gold, is highly toxic and has an adverse effect on child development.  The lack of protective masks for mine workers exposes children and adults to dust that may explain why the Migori district has the province’s highest tuberculosis rate as well as high rates of respiratory tract infections.
