The entire population of the seven douars, except the physically disabled, have moved to Mount Aleaban, blocking the reservoir that supplies the mine with water. Their demands are clear: infrastructure of roads, drinkable water and electricity for all, a good school and health centre, and work for those who want to work in a mine that is on their collective lands.
Contamination of the ground water is affecting the entire population of the area, including Tinghir. Contaminated waste from the mines is left in the open air, where cyanide and mercury, chemicals used in the treatment of silver, poison the entire population.
