Latin America is experiencing a mining boom caused by the price increase fueled by global demand, but at the same time the region is being battered by a wave of violent protests, strikes and marches from environmentalists.
"The amount of conflict is rising over the water rights to exploit mines, pollution of rivers, on the displacement of populations," said economist José de Echava, former Deputy Minister of Environment of Peru.
"But above all, is about water," he told AFP.
