Some miners hired in illegal small-scale tunnels in Pantukan, Compostela Valley, have reportedly armed themselves apparently to resist the move of government authorities to permanently remove them from harm’s way.
Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), told reporters in a news conference on Sunday in Pantukan that he was concerned with reports reaching him that some residents were carrying deadly weapons.
Saying that he wants to prevent violence in Sitios Diatpalo Uno and Diatpalo Dos high up in the Diat mountains 35 kilometers from poblacion Pantukan, he appealed to residents to voluntarily evacuate to escape danger from a feared continuing landslide
