Small-scale mining is devastating the rain forest. Mining crews are expected to hit streams of gold, but instead they hunt for small gold flakes scattered throughout the rain forest. They dredge the sediment from the river and clean the trees of the earth, and then use mercury to extract the precious metals from the earth. This method leaves the landscape depleted of nutrients, devoid of most vegetation, and has a disastrous effect on the toxic mercury of any remaining animal or plant.

Stamp Program Objectives
In order to address the global mercury problem, Aladdin has developed the Strategic Abatement of Mercury and Poverty (STAMP) program. This program is designed to induce artisanal and all mercury mining users to adopt Aladdin's highly efficient mining technologies. The fundamental strategy looks to illustrate the economic advantages of HGP to the miners. Although being able to provide a safe work environment , safety benefits alone are not sufficient to convince indigent miners to abandon mercury processing. Ultimately, the success of the program must rely on its ability to provide the miners with a greater level of income than what they are able to derive when using mercury. The broad objectives of the STAMP Program are as follows:
1. Employ as many artisanal miners as is possible while maintaining the economical integrity of the program.
2. Work to eliminate the use of mercury when extracting gold in the customary artisanal alluvial concentrates and hard rock deposit areas.
3. Increase artisanal miner wages above the national average and provide bonuses based on gold revenues.
4. Create new employment opportunities and provide training for higher paid jobs in the trades, management, administration, accounting, mining, geology, process engineering, and attendant disciplines.
5. Provide a humanitarian fund to benefit the miners and their families.
6. Convert sites to farming land or forestry after gold is depleted from the properties.
7. Attract artisanal miners to proven gold reserves set aside by large scale mining companies and / or the government.
8. Make a profit for all stakeholders
Aladdin's Pledge To Social Responsibility
Aladdin's Pledge To Social Responsibility
Aladdin Technologies Inc. is dedicated to bringing environmentally friendly processes to host countries so that mineral wealth can be extracted in a way that does not endanger local ecosystems or the health of native people. This interest - coupled with a commitment to mutual respect and a close involvement with all stakeholders - is behind the company's drive to help the government and citizens of countries achieve maximum benefit from their mineral resources. We also recognize that shareholder interests are best served when - based on our ethical treatment of indigenous people and sensitivity to environmental issues - countries actively seek out business relationships with the company.
Social responsibility is not simply an abstract concept, but rather, a realistic moral command and business strategy. Aladdin will do whatever is reasonable to help the communities of people around the world with which it interacts. Therefore, to disregard the tenants of mutual respect and fair trade would not only be morally corrupt, but it could also damage shareholder value in company mineral endeavors. Aladdin endeavors to be a leader in the way in which it brings obligations of social responsibility to its business enterprises.

The World Gold Miner Tokenizes Assets, Opens Up Trading On Coinsbit And Simex Exchanges
Along with these problems, ASGM sector also poses serious ecological threats, widespread use of toxic chemicals in production processes including the use of cyanide and mercury which damages the environment, and also becomes the root cause of serious water and air pollution. Also the ASGM sector is solely responsible for around 40 per cent of the world’s total human-made mercury emissions.

Gold Mining Destroys The Peruvian Rainforest With Mercury
Small-scale mining is devastating the rainforest. The mining crews don’t expect to hit streams of gold, but instead, they scavenge for tiny gold flakes scattered throughout the entire rainforest. They dredge the river sediment and clear out land of trees, and then they use mercury to extract precious metals out of the dirt. This method leaves the landscape sucked from nutrients, devoid of most vegetation, and with the toxic mercury having a disastrous effect on any remaining animal or plant life. “There’s enough gold in the landscape to make a great deal of money in a struggling economy. You just have to destroy an immense amount of land to get it,” Fernandez remarked.

The Women Who Hunt for Gold at the Top of the World
To remove gold from the rocks the men and women use mercury, a toxin that they wash away with water from a nearby glacier. The water flows down the mountain into rivers.
“The water used in mining is just dumped and all the communities downstream…receive polluted water” to support their farms, said Federico Chavarry. He is a lawyer and has worked on cases involving environmental crimes.

Qualified success: What’s next for Peru’s Operation Mercury?
But when Peru launched Operation Mercury in February 2019, the tangible effects were immediate and considerable. According to the NGO Amazon Conservation’s Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Project (MAAP), the military- and police-led Operation Mercury drove down deforestation by 92% in the area bounded by the Malinowski River, the edge of Tambopata National Reserve and the Interoceanic Highway.

How one country is grappling with mercury emissions from artisanal gold shops
What goes unseen are the toxic emissions from the rudimentary refining taking place within the many gold shops. Shop workers use mercury to separate the gold from other minerals and then burn off the mercury to yield pure gold. Depending on how open the shops are or how equipment is vented, “when they heat the gold up, the pollution travels down the street,” says Adam Kiefer, a chemistry professor at Mercer University.

MERCURY: A SILENT KILLER IN ZIMBABWE
At the river, the skilful washing process reduces the several sacks into just a few handfuls of fine sand. It is at this stage that the magic of mercury is summoned! When mercury – the only chemical cheaply available and affordable to the miners – is added to this slurry, it extracts all the little gold articles there could be in the sand and sinks to the bottom of the pan. This amalgam is separated, excess mercury and water thrown away, and the matter is taken for smelting in order for the mercury to evaporate, leaving the minuscule gold. The fumes from this smelting process are highly toxic.

Scramble for gold threatens cocoa farming in Osun community
While small-scale gold mining is a vital source of income, the use of toxic mercury to separate the gold from the ore is a major source of fear for the people.
According to experts, small-scale gold miners use mercury to separate gold from other materials, and the mercury finds its way into the environment and poses significant health risks for processors as well as those living and farming near mining sites.
Locating female ‘Voices’ in the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Sub-Saharan Africa: The case of Ghana
Countries that have ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a United Nations-backed international treaty designed to protect human health and the environment from releases of mercury and mercuric compounds, are required to produce a National Action Plan (NAP). Each must state, very clearly, how the mercury being used at artisanal and small-scale gold mines will be phased out.

Where does the mercury poisoning the Amazon come from?
The new report "The Amazon Biome in the Face of Mercury Contamination: An overview of mercury trade, science and policy in the Amazonian countries", connects these dramatic consequences at the local level with the dynamics of mercury in global trade. Prepared by WWF and the Gaia Amazonas Foundation, with the support of the UN Environment Programme, this publication reveals the alarming reality of mercury contamination in the Amazon and analyzes the route that this heavy metal follows to reach its final use for illegal and informal gold mining in the region. The report compiles and systematizes existing information, analyzes normative and policy instruments, and reviews the international mercury trade databases.

"Galamsey" In Ghana - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
"Galamsey" local parlance used to describe small scale illegal mining in Ghana has been a national headache for Ghana since the 1970s and the reasons are not farfetched. The rampaging effects of galamsey on our environment notably our lands, water bodies and forests, the health, safety and security issues of galamsey operatives themselves as well as the upsurge in social vices in galamsey communities underscore the national attention galamsey continues to court year after year.

Bolsonaro's Plan to Legalize Crimes Against Indigenous Peoples
Many Indigenous lands in the Amazon are suffering drastically from gold mining and its associated deforestation, according to Instituto Socioambiental (ISA), a non-profit organization. The Yanomami Indigenous people, for example, have reported that encroachment by thousands of wildcat miners in their territory has been associated with increased mercury poisoning, which has devasting consequences for health that can lead to lifelong disability and in extreme cases death.. Instituto FioCruz, a public research center of the Health Ministry, analyzed hair samples from women and children in two Yanomami communities and found that the majority had mercury concentrations above the limit established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
